Action Research Project

During my project I had a lot of things in mind and wanted to explore ideas with my group of students. After deciding that I wanted to do a questioning with my group and see good results. The reason I choose questioning is because I could see that my students were having trouble developing good questions and some of the questions were so simple. I knew that my students were good critical thinkers. So I decided to show them examples of good questions that some people developed when interview a person.

My plan was to help my students specially those who were having trouble writing English correctly and writing good questions for our interview. I made them think of how they want to express their ideas and create good questions where Kate would understand and give good answers. I gave my students at least five minutes where I made them write at least five questions they would like to know from Kate (guest speaker). After the five minutes were done I asked each of them to read their five questions to the group and see if they had similar questions. The students could see that some were similar and worked together to create strong and developed questions they would ask their guest speaker.

My action plan did work because my students were prepared for our guest speaker. They developed really good questions and were eager to ask their questions to Kate.During the interview I could see that my students were prepared. The students were writing down important information. I could see that they were really engaged and seeking answers about immigration and about the dream act. They were surprised to learn new things that they didn’t know and could help their families. At the end the students were happy that she came and that their questions were really good because all their wonders were answered. The students felt that they were ready to start the project and inform the audience about their topic.

After experimenting this action with my group I could see that if I am well prepared and helped I did change some things that weren’t good. The students put a lot of effort and by showing them examples of how questioning worked. The final result was good and it helped them. The next step would be researching because I would like to help my group get better at researching by finding good websites. I will start the cycle again by showing them how to find good trustable websites online when doing a project in the new future as they progress in school.

Blog 4/18

I was nervous at first wondering if everything if my students would like the guest speaker and answer all their questions and wonders they had for immigration. The week before I talked with the students and told them that we had to behave good and listen to what our speaker is saying.  The students were very engaged and asking good questions to the guest speaker. I was surprised to see that they had good questions and that they understood more about their topic.  I could see that some of them were taking good notes so they could incorporate it on their project. I am so glad that every thing went well with the speaker and the students were anxious to start working on their project. They have come with great ideas and what they want to inform their audience. It went well with them on Friday and I could see that they were happy that someone else would come and share what they know about immigration. I am glad that our project is going good and that we are working hard to  spread the word about our action project.

Bancroft 4/11

Student were excited to be back and wanting to work on their project. They were telling me what they have done during their spring break and that they traveled to some places and others stayed at home. I could see that they had some brilliant ideas and wanted to share, some were talking while someone else was speaking. I reminded them with our essential agreement and that we have to be respectful and good listeners. When I told my students about our gest speaker coming on April 18, I could see that they were anxious to know who that person was and they came up with good questions to ask the speaker. I was surprised to see that they come up with great detailed questions for our speaker. They wondered in what she worked so we did little of research about where she works and what her job is. I could see that our action plan is coming up great and after the interview I know that it will answer some of their wonders and know what they want to inform their audience. They are very hard working students and like to help each other, they are a great group to work with during these past months.

Blog for 3/28

It was fun seeing the students again after a week. I could see that they were energetic and ready for spring break. I had a lot of things planned to do with the students. I tried to make them focus on what I had planed for them but they weren’t paying any attention at all. Then I had to change my lesson and instead we played some activities so they could be engaged and unfocused. I could see that I am on track with everything that we  are supposed to be doing but sometimes  I feel sometimes overwhelm when some things aren’t going as it goes. I can see that being prepared and changing the lesson plan is great because after the activities that we did together students were paying more attention. There I explained how the project would be and what the expectations are for this project. i made them do a concept map and see what they know about immigration and from there we could see what our action plan would be and how we will inform the audience of what we are doing. Hopefully after the students return from Spring break we can be right on track and keep moving forward with our project.

Blog for 3/21

Today went really well with my students because they were coming up with ideas. Even though we had a new student in our group, each of the students were helping him catch up with all we have done. It made me see that they showed good team work .They want to create flyers and a power point/board where they would explain what immigration is and why the dream act will help other students get their GED or go to college. I was amazed with everything they said and made me think that probability I should show them a short clip where it explains about the dream act. I think that it will help them brainstorm more ideas and see what other things they could do. Towards the end I tried to let them have free time and play a game we choose from the iPads. The students knew that if they behaved will they would get extra time to play an activity or do something fun. I am happy that I am working with  these students and see them progress along the way. I know that being a coach is hard but as time goes I see that I can get their attention and they will listen to what I am saying because they know there is rules that we established together.

Blog for 3/14

Even though I was on Spring Break I decide to go and see my PA group. It was amazing seeing them and knowing that they were excited to see me.We have missed a lot after those days that school was canceled but I feel that we are on track. We worked with iPads because we needed to find resources for our topic. They were having difficulties on figuring out how to cite the sources. I was able to help each of my students with the resources. I saw that they were getting tired, so I decided to do a game. We played some activities and the students were engaged. They were happy to drink apple juice at the end after completing the game. I know that we will be working hard and a lot was done this Friday.

Blog for 3/7

I was excited to see my group again and do some activities. I was sad that one of my students went to another group but I know that he is in a group that he will have fun and come up with brilliant ideas. Today my lesson plan went well because I played the true and false game where the students got the chance to write two things that were true and one that was false. They had fun guessing who that person it was and deciding which of the three was false. We started to come up with an action plan where we decided to inform the audience about the dream act. The students had brilliant ideas and how we could distribute this information to the public. The students were very collaborative and on task. I could see that they had more confidence and talk more with me. They sometimes want me to speak on Spanish because they feel comfortable and I don’t mind doing that. They were trying their best and ask for help when they didn’t understand something. I am excited to see what the results would be at the end. I love working with these students and listening to their ideas.  🙂

Blog four..

It was really nice meeting with my immigration group after not seeing them for three weeks. I was excited to do my lesson that I had and I was so prepared. First I did an ice breaker with my students, so we could have some confidence and let them know that I am here to help them. One thing that frasturate me more was that the video I had to show my students didn’t work, I had checked it the day before but it didn’t work that day. Instead we read some parta of the story of each kid who immigrated to the U.S. The students got to see that there is people around the world that immigrate here to America.  Over all I did have a great time with the students and glad thay they were cooperating and they showed me around the school.

Group meeting 2, blog 4

I was excited to meet my group and get to know each of the students interest. I was nervous at first but as I got to know them it was fun working with them. They had brilliant ideas and it was nice hearing them.  My lesson plan did go well because I got to do everything I had plan because the student were collaborating and wanted to work on the questions that they were asked. I could see that one of the students was having a hard time  and I tried helping him. I asked questions to get him engaged but had to play an activity so he can  get engaged and give some brilliant ideas he had, even though he said he didn’t want to be in this group he knew more than he thought.  I think that on my next lesson plan I will start with an activity so they can have fun for a bit then get them to work in the assignments we have to do. Before it was time to go, I asked to ask their family what immigration was so they could get some background. I promised them that I would bring more information like articles that are related to our topic. My students are very anxious to find a solution even though they want to write a letter and publish it in the newspaper so their voices are heard. It will be an excited semester working with them and come up with great solutions for this cause. 🙂

Blog three..

I was excited to go to the first day and meet the students. I had great ideas and activities to do with my group. I couldn’t make it, but I am hoping to meet my students this week where I can get the opportunity to meet them, which I could know they interests and why they chooses this topic. It will help me get to know each of them and would like for them to have confidence on me, which meant that I will try my best to be there each friday and help them with their project.  I am little nervous to meet them on Friday and probability they will ask me why I wasn’t there last friday. I am looking forward in working with my group and can’t wait to hear their ideas.
